A slice of history

These are the only regional sweets of Marco de Canaveses with a true historical tradition. They are said to have had their origin in the 17th century in a nuns’ convent.

However, they are undoubtedly referred to from 1819 on (in the reign of king D. João VI), the date of the building of Casa dos Lenteirões, which is about 3 km away from Marco de Canaveses.

It must be pointed out that king D. Luís had already demanded that there would always be sweets from Freixo in his banquets.

The art of their making has passed from generation to generation but their variety and quality have always been kept (“Fatias” from Freixo, “cavacas” and cookies).
