Trail: Sobral da Adiça

From Sobral da Adiça to the border fronteira (The smugglers’ route)

Sobral da Adiça is located in the Moura municipality and stands out due to its natural landscape of great beauty with its groves of holm-oaks and the Adiça and Ficalho mountains. The Ficalho mountain is the southern border with the municipality of Serpa.
This circular walk unfolds through a typical landscape of the Alentejo region, starting at the village of Adiça near the parish church. We walk past the creek and the bullfight arena and continue on earthen tracks to the border, along which we walk for more than 5 km. The trail follows the border stones through a delightful scenery, sometimes on the Portuguese side and sometimes on the Spanish side of the border.
We walk past the former casetas (cabins) of the carabineers and fiscal guards. Here we can take the path that goes to the top of the 532 meter Ficalho mountain, from where we can enjoy beautiful views. At the second caseta, no longer serving its former purpose and demoted to a “simple” Alentejo “monte” (typical property) we begin walking back through groves of holm-oaks to the starting point.
It is a beautiful trail without steep tracks (unless you decide to climb the mountain), not too long and always on easy earthen ground – for an unhurried walk the good Alentejo way!
