Trail: Santana e Cambas
From Santana de Cambas to the S. Domingos mines (The Route of Smuggling)
The trail starts at the small village where we can visit a small but interesting museum dedicated to smuggling. Then we follow the route of the old railway (that made the connection between the mine and the transport of ore at Pomarão), passing by the old S. Domingos mining complex that now stands in ruins and by the locality of the same name that was built to accommodate the miners and the Englishmen that exploited the mine. Here we start coming back, but there is also the opportunity to go on walking to the beautiful banks of the Chança River, close to Spain. Although the first stage of the trail runs inside the area of the Natural Park of the Guadiana Valley, it is when we are coming back, chiefly in the case of the extension to the Chança River, that the contact with the landscape, the fauna and the flora is stronger.
It is a beautiful trail that runs mostly through good earthen tracks surrounded by the unusual landscapes of the important mining complex in ruins and the calm and peaceful nature of the Alentejo.
