From Sra. dos Aflitos to N. Sra. da Lapa

Included in the Ways of Faith this trail begins at N. Sra dos Aflitos and links it with the Sanctuary of N. Sra. da Lapa. N. Sra. dos Aflitos is the meeting point of several ways, the Way of St. James and the Way of Fátima (in the opposite direction) being included with all their natural diverse trails walked by the pilgrims’ own will.
The trail is short and easy; it goes through the lovely Serra da Lapa, with its typical landscape of granite blocks sprinkled with genistas, and through rural and wood paths flanked by chestnut and pine trees. From Quintela on and quite close to the Sanctuary, the trail follows Joana’s steps, the dumb child shepherd who, tradition has it, was cured by her devotion to the image of the Virgin of Lapa in 1498. Joana found it in a rift of the rock where the very beautiful and unusual Santuário da Lapa (the Sanctuary of the Rock) stands nowadays. It is an extremely rich trail in what landscape, heritage and religion are concerned.
As an option, we can begin the trail in Carregal, where the writer Aquilino Ribeiro has lived as a child. This choice allows us to travel to the writer’s times, as it ends in Lapa Sanctuary, which is next to the former College of the Jesuits, where the writer has studied.

THE YARD AQUILINO RIBEIRO

The Yard Aquilino Ribeiro, in Carregal, provides access to some stone houses where the writer is said to have been born or at least has lived most of his childhood.
