Trail: Galegos
From Galegos to La Fontañera (The Route of coffee smuggling)
Between the Portuguese village of Galegos and the Spanish one of La Fontañera smuggling – mainly of coffee –, was one of the daily activities that allowed the inhabitants’ difficult subsistence in wild surroundings of poor soil.
The trail that begins and ends in Galegos runs past Pitaranha, Fuente Oscura – an almost ghostly village – and La Fontañera, a village so close to the border that one of its houses is in the Portuguese side. It’s a very beautiful rural landscape trail through winding and cork oak-bordered lanes and paths often confined in ancient and high granite walls and frequently “watched over” from far by the fortress town of Marvão.
The trail is very pleasant, of medium difficulty and accessible but it has some slopes to overcome; an irregular stone pavement sometimes with big blocks makes progress a bit more difficult in some areas.
