Trail: Espichel
From Sesimbra Castle to the Lighthouse of Cape Espichel
This non-circular trail begins at Sesimbra Castle along the southern cliffs of the sea coast up to the Lighthouse of Cape Espichel. It´s a varied and very beautiful route with some easy parts and others that are a bit more demanding.
The descent begins at the Castle through a footpath amidst vegetation leading to the Cavalo Fort Lighthouse near Sesimbra fishing harbor. From there on we follow the cliffs, sometimes through an earthen road and others through quite narrow footpaths past Fort Baralha up to the Cape Espichel Lighthouse. There we can also visit the Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora do Cabo (Our Lady of the Cape), with its Chapel of the Memory (Ermida da Memória) and the church of the 17th century as well as the dinosaur footprints on Pedra da Mua.
