From the Avessadas monastery to Tongóbriga

This circular trail takes us from the imposing Avessadas Monastery, built in the second half of the 20th century, to the Roman village of Tongóbriga that dates back to the 2nd century. It is not only a time travel but also an experience of walking on many and various types of grounds: old farms, ploughed fields, ancient tracks and bridges, recent tarmac roads, beaten earth stretches and even short medieval and Roman footpaths.
The trail starts at the monastery that hosts the shrine of the Infant Jesus of Prague; from there we walk towards Quinta da Mória that stands across the way and belongs to it, and continue down the slope to the valley where we cross an ancient bridge, which is now small and plain but was once one of the main corridors to Marco de Canavezes. After walking through very different areas, including Tuías, we get to Tongóbriga that used to be an important Roman town. The route we take to reach our starting point is also very pleasurable, going through small villages and passing by the shrine of Nossa Senhora do Castelinho.
It is a very interesting trail with no special difficulty that allows the contact with the varied beauty of the landscape, the places it goes through and their people.

AVESSADAS MONASTERY

Located in the Quinta da Mória, in Avessadas, the monastery of the Barefoot Carmelites’ Order was built in 1961.

TUIAS CHURCH

The Parish church of Tuias has the Divino Salvador as its patron saint. The festivities in its honour are held on the first Sunday in August. This church was recently built and its bell towers stand out.

The Freixo Archeological Area includes a small Roman settlement that is known as Tongobriga. view more »

NOSSA SENHORA DO CASTELINHO

The Nossa Senhora da Natividade do Castelinho shrine stands on a hill at the Castelinho village, from where we can see a wide expanse of landscape towards the valley of the Tâmega river and the Marão mountain.
