POI: PIPA FOUNTAIN
Located on the shore of the Tagus River and framed by a small beach and the Jardim do Rio (garden), the Fonte da Pipa was built by order of King D. João V in 1736. The impressive fountain with its four water-spouts supplied quality drinking water to the inhabitants of the then village of Almada. In the 18th and 19th centuries it still represented an important supply point for the ships that sailed from there to the Atlantic Ocean.
Nearby we can visit the Núcleo Naval do Museu Municipal (Museum) in the old facilities of the former Companhia Portuguesa de Pescas (Portuguese Fisheries company).
