POI: CRISTO REI
Inaugurated on the 17th May 1959 in the presence of 300,000 people, the Cristo-Rei Monument (the Christ the King statue) stands on a hill overlooking the Tagus river from a 113 m height. With a total weight of 40.000 tons, the 28 m high concrete image stands on an 82 m high pedestal, at a total height of 110 metres. The pedestal consists of four pillars in the form of an arch that represent the four cardinal points. Under the statue and occupying a fifth of the pedestal’s height is the Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Paz (Our Lady of Peace).
In the adjacent areas there is also a building to assist the pilgrims, the Way of the Cross, the High Cross that came from the Fatima Shrine and also several rooms, chapels, the sacristy and souvenir shops.
Cristo Rei is also a belvedere with fantastic views over the capital and its surroundings. From its observation deck, besides being able to watch the image of the Cristo Rei at close range, we can also enjoy a magnificent view within a 20 km radius.
