The small great world of lighthouses and lighthouses’ keepers

The Santa Marta Lighthouse and Museum located in Cascais opened in 2007 after having undergone extensive restoration led by architects Francisco and Manuel Aires de Mateus that has chiefly focussed on the old houses of the lighthouse keepers.

Sandra Santos, the person in charge of the Santa Marta Lighthouse and Museum told Itinerante that there is in Portugal a “general lack of knowledge” about lighthouses and lighthouses’ keepers. And adds “the Lighthouse and Museum is an excellent opportunity for visitors to contact with this reality”…

A visit to the exhibition is a true journey into the world of lighthouses and lighthouse keepers, a fascinating experience. And so is the beauty of the surroundings when seen from atop the lighthouse.

The Santa Marta Lighthouse and Museum is open from Tuesday through Sunday all year round: in winter (from October 1 to April 30) from 18h00am to 6h00pm and in summer (from May 1 to September 30) from 10h00am to 7h00 pm. Since the entry to the museum is free you do not have an excuse not to go there as soon as you can…
