It was an event full of symbolism: as the theme of the first number of the magazine was the French Invasions, the guests were offered Maria Afonso, the white wine Wellington liked to drink and Martim Afonso the liquor from Quinta da Póvoa where Lieutenant General Spencer had set up his headquarters when he was in the Lines of Torres. Guests were also served the “Cake of the Generals”, which Wellington is said to have eaten on the day before the Battle of Roliça; there were Pastéis de Belém too as a way to pay tribute to Lisbon.
